Tyra Banks has been transforming future models for the past 20 seasons on America’s Next Top Model, but the two-time SI Cover model pulled off the biggest transformation of all when she decided to pay homage to 15 top models for a new a photography exhibit titled “15.” With the aid of stylist Ty-Ron Mayes, Banks turned herself into Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Kate Upton, Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, Lauren Hutton, Jerry Hall, Iman, Kate Moss, Twiggy, Brooke Shields, Claudia Schiffer, Carmen Dell’Orefice and Grace Jones. Swimsuit modeling is a serious business, but sometimes the girls can get a little wacky after too many hours on a photo shoot. Luckily for us, SI’s cameras were there to pick up all the zaniness. Whether it’s Irina shaking (excuse me, shayking) her booty or Ariel playing around with a horse, the models always find a way to keep themselves entertained. Don’t believe us? See for yourself as we present these outtakes and photos from SI’s 2013 swimsuit shoot in Spain.

Q&A with Vega designer and owner Victoria Kray

SwimDaily: Tell me about your company?
Victoria Kray: Vega was conceived of in Jamaica, born in LA, blossomed in Maui, and landed in NYC in November, 2011.  Victoria Kray is designer and owner.  All work is handmade in NYC.

SD: How would you describe the company?
VK: Vega is a jewelry line for the cosmically inclined.  Love is in the Earth, and crystals are a direct line to source energy.  Everyone needs one.  Each amulet is intended to protect & adorn the wearer with good vibes.

SD: What philosophies are important to the success of your company?
VK: My personal philosophy of ONE LOVE is really simple and boils down to this idea:  We’re all in this together, so love one another and do no harm.  I certainly believe in the concept of sacred commerce.

SD: Where did the name of your company come from?
VK: The name came to me while on a trip to Jamaica when I was 21 years old-it’s the name of a very bright star…and I saw it in my future.  When it came time to name my business, I never even considered anything else.

SD: Have you spotted any celebrities wearing you products?
VK: Erin Wasson, Angela Lindvall, Florence Welch, Juliette Lewis, Akon, The Ladies of Icona Pop

SD: What new products are you most excited for?
VK: I am loving the new Aqua Aura quartz pieces…it’s the most beautiful color, like my favorite beaches’ turquoise water.  Extra special too because it’s made by bonding 24k gold with the quartz in a vaporization process.

SD: Where would you like to see your company in 10 years?
VK: I’m an island gal at heart and I will definitely have a flagship store somewhere tropicale!  I see Vega having expanded to a business that funds a philanthropy.  I’ve always wanted to empower women and I have a secret dream project for Vega that includes a personal retreat center and spiritual boot camp for women who need help.

SD: How has Sports Illustrated Swimsuit impacted your brand?
VK: It has made me see a bigger picture than I had before.  I live for swimwear and islands, and my aesthetic is definitely *earthy/beachy*, but being in the issue for the first time got me to expand to Miami Swim week and some business in Brazil.  Now, I’m planning to spend the winter island hopping and having trunk shows.

SD: What has is been like working with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit?
VK: It’s been great working with SI-thanks ladies & gents!  You guys do such an amazing job.  I designed some new pieces for the next issue-so I’m hoping they will make the issue.

SD: Where do you see swim trends in 10 years?
VK: I feel like there is such a creative surge in the swim market and so many different vibes, thankfully!  Endless summer, endless expressions.

SD: What does the 50th anniversary of the Swimsuit Issue mean to you?
VK: I will never get tired of seeing a gorgeous goddess on a beautiful beach wearing beautiful jewels & clothing.  These natural beauties have always inspired me in a world of fakes!

Michelle Lombardo turns 30

Michelle Lombardo burst onto the scene in 2003 when she entered SI’s inaugural “Fresh Face” contest. This is the passion statement she submitted for the event: “I’m a born athlete. My lifetime involvement in sports has shaped me into the person I am today. They have taught me self-esteem, respect, perseverance, responsibility and determination. In high school I focused mainly on volleyball, and since moving to Southern California I continue to play on the beach.” The statement won over the audience as Michelle won the contest and appeared in the 2004 and 2005 issue. After SI, Lombardo pursued acting and appeared in episodes of Entourage and Californication as well as the movies Click and All In. And even at 30, she looks as good as ever. Happy birthday Michelle.

Before they were jet riding and limousine flying, the SI Swimsuit models were just like you and me – poor teenagers in crappy cars. We sat down with Julie Henderson, Natasha Barnard, Cintia Dicker, Genevieve Morton and Emily DiDonato about their first car. One drove a purple (yes, purple) Ford Explorer while another still drives the 1996 Volkswagen Beetle her grandmother gave her. Who drove what? Find out as we present this video of models and their first car.

On Saturday night, the sports world was tuned into the Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez fight wondering if this was the night Mayweather would finally lose. One of the fans who watched the fight was six-time SI Swimsuit model Jessica Gomes, who spent the evening with Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell and celebrity stylist Sophia Banks-Coloma. Mitchell posted the above photo to her Instagram account with the message: “Hehaha @sophiabanksc caught @iamjessicagomes and I in the moment while watching the fight. We know who we’re cheering for!

We’ve already discussed some of Gomes’ other hobbies (Grand Prix, badass rapping) and now we’ll add boxing to the list. Of course, she always looks best in a swimsuit as the gallery below demonstrates.

Beach Bunny loves its SI Swimsuit models. We already told you about Chrissy Teigen‘s line of bridal swimwear and now it has another collection from a swimsuit veteran — Irina Shayk. It is the second time the Russian model has designed swimsuits for Beach Bunny, the first time was three years ago and the designs ended up in the 2010 Swimsuit issue. This campaign, shot by Yu Tsai, features the 27 year old bombshell on the picturesque white sand beaches of Belize. The Irina Shayk for Beach Bunny collection made a sneak peek debut on the catwalks of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami this summer with rave reviews.  “To design a swimwear line is always a pleasure,” says Shayk. “Especially for Beach Bunny, because first of all I feel like they are my family.”

Throwback Thursday: Izabel Goulart

It’s hard to choose the prettiest SI Swimsuit model of all time. It’s also a challenge to choose the nicest, meanest, sexiest or funniest as well. But after checking out Izabel Goulart’s kickboxing routine, which she posted to her Instagram feed last week, we feel confident calling her the toughest model to ever grace the pages of SI Swimsuit. The Brazilian model appeared in the 2011 and 2012 SI Swimsuit issue but wasn’t always the knockout she is today. “No boys for me growing up,” she told Fox News. “I was so skinny and tall. Everybody called me a giraffe. I had no boobs and no butt and nobody liked me, I was so lonely. All the boys would come to me and want advice because they wanted my friend. But nobody ever wanted me — high school was a very sad, lonely time.” Luckily for us, no one is calling her a giraffe anymore. Here are some of Izabel’s best shots from SI Swimsuit.

SI Swimsuit: The Week In Instagram

Autumn has arrived and SI’s Swimsuit models are enjoying the great outdoors. Bruna Schmitz went four-wheeling during Day 4 of the Fiesta Movement while Christie Brinkley took off for Africa to raise publicity for the country’s endangered species. Newleyweds Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, meanwhile, enjoyed some beach time during their honeymoon. Miss any of the action? Don’t worry – we’ve got the best photos in this week’s Instagram gallery.

Since its inception in 1999, the body painting section of the SI Swimsuit issue has always been among its most popular. This year was no exception. Led by body paint extraordinaire Joanne Gair, models Kate Upton, Chrissy Teigen, Alyssa Miller, Anne V, Ariel Meredith and Nina Agdal all took the plunge in 2013. And as the above video demonstrates, SI’s models really like to get down and dance while wearing nothing but paint made to resemble a swimsuit. Wouldn’t you?

Michelle Alves turned 35 on Thursday. The Brazilian native, who appeared in the 2003 and 2005 SI Swimsuit Issue, has taken a step back from modeling to concentrate on raising her three kids with husband Guy Oseary.  Since appearing in SI, Alves has gone onto become a top model and landed deals with with Valentino, Christian Dior, Escada, Ralph Lauren, Missoni, Miss Sixty, Michael Kors, GAP, Emporio Armani and Michael Kors Swimwear. But we’ll always know her for her work as a SI Swimsuit model, which we’ve highlighted in the gallery below. Happy Birthday, Michelle!

Old Navy ad featuring Damaris Lewis

***********

While browsing Twitter on Thursday, I came across this tweet from Damaris Lewis: “Oldnavy.com homepage is looking pretty cool today.” Curious, I checked the Old Navy homepage and Saw Damaris, front and center, alerting the world to the company’s jeans and pants sale. Since Damaris is one of the friendliest SI Swimsuit models around, I decided to send her a few questions about what she’s up to. As usual, she’s busy, busy, busy.

SwimDaily: I just went to Oldnavy.com and there you were. Is it still weird to see your face on the website of these major companies?
Damaris Lewis: I’ve been modeling for 8 almost 9 years now and I still get excited when I see myself on any advertisement or catalog. From Yves Saint Laurent to Old Navy. It’s my work so I’m proud.

SD: I also saw your new website is launching. Tell us about that.
DL: I have a lot of jobs. Whenever I get into conversations with people I’m meeting for the 1st time it’s hard for me to remember everything I’m up to. That’s why I’m creating the website. It’ll have my modeling, dancing, hosting, acting, and writing content on it. I’m very excited. And it drops on my birthday :) 10.10

SD: The NBA season is just a couple months away. Any early predictions for the upcoming season?
DL: Early predictions for the upcoming NBA season: I think the underdog teams are going to be really good this year. Golden State, Houston, Nets.  We all know they have great players but they’re not up there with the notoriety of the teams like the Knicks, Celtics, Lakers, etc. Derrick Rose will be back so I’m excited about that and so will Russell Westbrook hopefully. If the major players stay healthy I think the 2013-2014 season will be great.

Vy Nguyen: Lolli Swim started in 2010.  We started having small trunk shows in Laguna Beach and the line just took off from there =)

SD: What philosophies are important to the success of your company?
VN: Never give up!  If you truly believe in your brand and put your heart in it, everything will fall into place.

SD: What new products are you most excited for?

SD: What has is been like working with SI Swimsuit? What does your company do to prepare for the Swimsuit year to come?
VN: I love working with the SI girls.  The themes and timelines they come up with really help me prepare unique suits for consideration.   I always lay out the themes and see where Lolli and fit it =)

SD: Where do you see swim trends in 10 years?
VN: In the recent years, swim has really pushed it limits.  I really feel like there are no rules in swim.  Anything and everything goes!

There are roughly 700 million websites in existence, which gives users quite a few options when they go online. We asked SI Swimsuit models Adaora, Chrissy Teigen, Hannah Davis, Jessica Perez, Kate Bock and Nina Agdal to name their favorite online destination. Unsurprisingly, the responses were scattered. Chrissy is addicted to D-Listed. Kate can’t get enough Facebook and Twitter. Nina, meanwhile, likes some Danish website we can’t pronounce or spell. What sites do the rest of the models swear by? Find out in the above video.

Hannah Davis and Adaora want to get physical

Hannah Davis and Adaora want to get physical. No, not that kind of physical, the kind where you go to the park and throw a football or race up a hill. We asked the two SI Swimsuit models their idea of a perfect date and both said they’d prefer a daytime get together, going to the park or having a cup of coffee. That way, as Hannah so delicately put it, “I know I can leave if it doesn’t work out.” She then went onto explain, “It’s too much pressure doing the dinner thing and then you have to get all dolled up and then they think you look like that normally when I want you to love me when I’m in my sweatpants.” SwimDaily sat down with the two models and discussed a variety of subjects including their bucket lists, karaoke songs and the perks of being a model.

Cheryl Tiegs used to receive the same phone call every year: “You haven’t lost any weight have you, Cheryl,” the voice on the other line would say. And just like that, Tiegs knew she was invited back for another year at SI Swimsuit. The voice on the other end belonged to then-swimsuit editor Julie Campbell, who saw Tiegs as a cornerstone of the issue. “They kind of like girls falling out of their bathing suits,” Tiegs recalled during a recent interview with AOL. “And that was me because I was never rail-thin … more the tumble-in-the-hay, girl-next-door type.” In all, Tiegs made 11 appearances in the swimsuit issue including three covers (1970, 1975, and 1983). Her fame also landed her on the cover of mainstream magazines such as People (four times) and Time (three times), which led many to consider her the Golden Girl of the ’70s. The Golden Girl turns 66 on Wednesday and SwimDaily is paying tribute with this collection of her finest swimsuit pics.
